The Girls is the result of a 3 month acting workshop held by Julia Sherman and Lara Galagher at a Senior Center in Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. A rotating cast of women reenacted adapted scenes from the pilot episode of The Golden Girls, lapsing in and out of improvisation and allowing the women to play all of the characters, and at time, to just play themselves. The resulting video uses the popular TV show, whose appeal spanned generations, to address (and find humor in) what it means to lose one’s use value in a Western, Capitalist society.
