The Doctor and The Sailor

This project was a participatory performance held at The Museum of Modern Art. Museum-goers assisted in re-creating the Picasso painting, Demoiselles d’Avignon, located in the museum’s permanent collection painting gallery adjacent to the site of our performance. A single model played all 5 of the women depicted in the piece, and the composite photograph was made on-site. Volunteers ran from the photography set-up to the painting gallery to refer to the original work, adjusting the tableau as necessary. The fruit pile was of particular concern, as it is an element of the painting that is remarkably neglected in the critical discourse.
