Cone of Power

Backstrap looms are portable looms used in Mexico and Central America. The loom is attached to a stable structure, and the weaver’s body weight is used to create tension in the warp. One can weave virtually anywhere. For this piece, the collaborative woven sculpture is constructed over the course of eight hours of uninterrupted weaving in the gallery. The looms hook onto a center rope suspended from the ceiling, and the counter-balance of the opposing bodies holds the structure together. The weavers pass their yarn around in a circle, weaving upwards, and connecting their looms to one another simultaneously. The resulting shelter remains in the space as an installation.
